Hard to find haydn
on: October 15, 2011, 03:06:56 AM
I have been searching for the music to Haydn's Sonata No. 17 in E flat major, Hob XVI: Eb2, L17 for some time now. it is rarely seen in on-line collections of his sonatas. It is not the sonata commonly referred to as #17, which is in Bb Major. Does anyone know where I might find the music for this? Unfortunately, it is not here at Piano Street. Thanks

You'll find it in either of the standard Urtext editions - Wiener Urtext (Vol. 1, previously 1a) or Henle (Vol. 1) - but I don't think there's any separate publication.  There won't be a public domain copy anywhere, since this sonata wasn't published until the 1960s.  17 is its number in WU.

The work list in New Grove calls it doubtful.  There may be more up-to-date information about its authenticity in the revised edition of WU that appeared in 2009, which I haven't seen.
