Play new or old pieces for mock audition?
on: October 21, 2011, 08:57:54 PM
Hi, I have a mock audition for a university I want to go to in about two weeks, and I was wondering: should I play the pieces I've already completed for an exam in August, or should I play the pieces I've started only 3 weeks ago (aka it's not anywhere near finished). The real audition is in March so I'll probably have them ready to go by then, and I really wanted some feedback from the professors there. But maybe I should play my old pieces so they could give me an accurate assessment as to my playing? What do you guys think?

i would approach a mock audition as practice for the real thing. the purpose being to recreate audition conditions to maximize your chances of success in the real thing. as such, I would play your pieces as works in progress, just play them at the slowest tempo that allows to you play musically and in control.  this way when you do the real thing you already have a 'performance' under your belt and this should help immensely with nerves, etc.

i don't see much benefit from playing pieces you've already performed/tested out for this type of thing.  that's just how I would go about doing it.

I would say play new pieces for audition to put some pressure on yourself.
Funny? How? How am I funny?
