Importance of ABRSM testing?

So, I was wondering, what is the main importance of ABRSM testing? I could understand working towards a goal, but other than that I'm kind of lost as to why it's something that a lot of people believe makes a difference. I'm just curious.

anyway, I think one of the main importances in ABRSM exams are that they want to  whether you are of sufficient standard to go to the next level. there was a similar thread I read but can't remember it.....
