Beethoven op 27 no 2, 3rd mvt, intro arpeggio fingering (reworded to the point)
on: October 28, 2011, 02:03:44 AM
Years ago, I would play this arpeggio with 1235 all the way up the major and minor arpeggios. Now, I feel it is more efficient to use 1235 only in root position, and 1245 in first and second inversion positions. 1245 on first inversion in major feels slightly uncomfortable because I have not been practicing it, however I can feel that there is less tension in my hand, so I'm sure it will work itself out. Thoughts?

To me it plays an important role if the third note of the arpeggio is on a white or on a black key. If it's on a white key I always use 1235 where ever it's possible. If it's on a black key I use 1245 for the first inversions. I have difficulties to articulate notes with my 4th finger when all the other notes are black. Your post made me even think about changing my fingering in M. 70 into 1234 instead of 1245, as I always had trouble with this one, it just didn't sound clear and crisp.

This is becoming more of a mystery to me. Today I found it easier to do it my "original " way, 1235, except in 2nd inversion in major, where I use 1245. I guess there isn't a correct way, if it feels easy to play and does not cause tension, it can't be wrong. Do piano teachers vary in how insistent they are that a student use a certain fingering? Individuality of hand size and shape must affect efficient fingering quite dramatically in some passages.
