Numbness in left arm
on: October 29, 2011, 08:46:42 PM
The last couple days I've been practicing, and only when I've been practicing, my left forearm has become numb. It doesn't seem to affect my playing but it's distracting. Should I be concerned? Has this happened to anyone else?

Never heard of it. Most likely you're tight in your playing, and compressing a sensory nerve somehow. As long as you don't have any motor weakness, it's probably best resolved by staying loose and relaxed when you play. Perhaps you are sitting too high, or too low...
If it's progressive and not improving, you might go see a neurologist. But it really doesn't sound serious as you've described it.

Yes you should be concerned. Like Gvans said consult a neurologist. A pianist should only focus on their music not their pain in the arms. You are better off safe than sorry.

Yes, I would be concerned a bit about the numbing sensation, too. Sometimes, it is merely temporary overuse. I would add ice and rest and see if it alleviates. Good luck and try to relax your shoulders and neck. Best.
