Santiago Rodriguez... it's been said that he was born to play Rachmaninov. I can't speak for his interpretations of other composers, but when it comes to the Russian master, there is no one I'd rather listen to.
I had been listening to other interpretations of Rachmaninov daily for months: Horowitz, Lisitsa, Richter, Pollini, Argerich and a score of others... hoping in vain to find a gem. Rodriguez is that gem. The others are good, but Rodriguez is truly masterful in comparison. His technique is so good that it becomes transparent, and his shimmering playing shines with dynamic range. The moment I heard his rendition of Preludes G#min and Bmin, I knew I'd struck gold. His interpretation of Concerto No.3 is also unparalleled, and recorded with clarity.
It's an absolute shame that he's not better known.
