Heard of the Glenn Gould Professional School?
on: January 16, 2003, 01:27:58 AM
This might be a futile post but...I was wondering if anybody is familiar with the Glenn Gould Professional School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. I'm looking into transferring there for a year and then hopefully on to Curtis. I really know very little about the school but it's the only one i haven't missed the deadline for Sept. 2003/4. So if anybody has heard good/bad things about this place, or knows people who've gone there, I'd appreciate some info. Thanks!

In Canada, the most prominent music centers are Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.  I believe that the top institutions, respectively, are l'Universite de Montreal, Glenn Gould School and University of British Colombia.

As for Glenn Gould, it is a fair bit cheaper than most schools in the states, and the quality of the teachers is exceptionally high, I think.  You have the likes of Leon Fleisher, Andre Laplante, and Marc Durand, to name a few.  As OneHand10Fingers hinted, choose the teacher, not the school.  And Toronto is not a bad place to live - very multicultural, and quite a number of concerts.

thanx for pulling up my old post guys. i was going to study at glenn gould with marc durand but i was recently accepted to the royal college of music in london, so i've decided to go there instead for various reasons. sadly i applied so late (so late in fact that i had to send a taped audition cause i live in ny) that i had no time to find out anything about the piano faculty. i know, pick the teacher not the school, but my particular situation was so screwed up and difficult that i don't even want to get into it. so if anybody knows anything about the rcm faculty, some info would be appreciated.

The London (England) school is excellent.  The Glenn Gould school is also excellent.  The RCMT (Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto) has been educating music students for over a century all across Canada and has produced many professional musicians. (They have had a program of distance education for many years.  It is possible to obtain a performance or teacher's degree in piano and voice from the RCMT without ever having set foot at the school in Toronto).
