Simple question: 3 movements in Haydn Piano Sonata no. 9? Urgent!
on: November 25, 2011, 03:50:00 PM
Here is the only "recording" I could find.
Here is a link to the sheet music:
https://imslp.org/wiki/Piano_Sonata_No.9_Hob.XVI:4,_D_major_%28Haydn,_Joseph%29
Three tempi are indicated: Allegro, Menuet and Trio.
Would you consider these movements, meaning this sonata has three movements?
Also, would Allegro be considered fast and Menuet slow?
Thanks!!!

I'd say the sonata has two movements because usually the menuet and trio sections in most sonatas are considered as 1 movement. Yes, Allegro would be fast and Menuet slow. A Menuet and trio usually comes after a fast movement and trio is usually quieter than the menuet section. Menuet and trio is usually also the third movement of a symphony or string quartet.
