Videorecording equipment, tripods, positioning, etc
on: December 14, 2011, 03:15:45 AM
Hi:

I just bought a new Sony handycam DCR-SX65 and I know very little about camcorders. For the technical types out there:

1. Can I purchase a remote control shutter button for this camcorder? I see them for the Canon digital Rebel and stuff but don't see any listings for camcorders.

2.  What kind of tripod would you suggest I get? At the moment, I have a simple one with no ball head but I don't want to spend too much money on a tripod as I'll only be recording for YouTube.

3.  What is the best way to position the tripod? I mean, what location is best? Behind you, to the side, distance, etc.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

1. This is a question you need to ask before you decide to buy a particular camera.  A Canon Rebel is a DSLR camera with video capability - quite different than a camcorder.  There are a number of aftermarket remote triggers available for DSLR systems (giving you more flexibility in choosing one).  Nonetheless a quick google search turned up this:

2. As it probably goes without saying, more expensive ones are of better quality.  Do you want to trust a cheap tripod to hold up a camera that costs several hundred dollars?  Different tripod designs exist to fit various shooting situations.  Consider the environment you will be shooting in.

This link gives points to consider:

There are heads designed specifically for shooting video.  You may wish to take them into consideration.

Search Youtube for tripod reviews and tests if you want to see them put through their paces.

3.  This is all up to interpretation.  Choosing a different point of view will give a different look.  You said you are doing this for Youtube, so check out numerous videos and observe what type of composition is employed.  Make note of those that interest you.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
