Editions for Scriabin
on: September 09, 2004, 07:28:32 PM
What are the best editions for scriabin. I love Henle for most composers, but they only had his preludes and two of his sonatas. Other suggestions?

Dover do a very good edition of Scriabins' complete preludes and etudes for piano (in 1 book), it's only about £10 as well which is great value. The quality of the layout is also very good.

thanks, though do you know of, say, a good russian edition or a nice urtext. I don't mind paying a bit extra for a nice edition. I will order some of them from dover though.
cheers

THe dover's are indeed, a wonderful bargain, but beware as the sonatas in particular, are full of errors.

Ironically, the one Russian edition of the sonatas I saw had a bunch of careless, stupid errors.  For the sonatas, I would actually recommend the Schirmer edition, because it's been very well edited by Sheldon.  The term 'urtext' one always must take with a grain of salt, as unless you have the manuscript in front of you (and even then sometimes they later made corrections), you'l always be getting an edited version, urtext notwithstanding.  A case in point is in regards to the 7th Sonata (White Mass) in particular, as I got a chance to look at the autograph before it was auctioned off and it has a VERY interesting "tempo" marking that is marked incorrectly in every subsequent edition.

I Europe there is the "Edition Könemann", a low price edition of mostly russian piano music. They published the complete works by Scriabin and this is THE ONLY Urtex edition available at the moment. The Könemann volumes refer when ever possible to the autographs and have a very good critical comment to every work. It is the best you can have for Scriabin!

I have the complete Sonata by Konemann. And Dover complete etudes and preludes.

I don't have the skill to find mistakes in those pieces. They were both cheap and complete, so I like them.

Mind someone pointing out some of the errors in the Dover Sonatas, mainly the 5th? And some links to where I can buy rather cheap but very good versions of the sonatas?
