Tips for practicing
on: December 20, 2011, 08:51:43 AM
Hi everyone, I have a question which I hope you will be able to answer.

I've been practicing piano for the last year or so, always spending at least 1 hour a day behind the piano. I fill my timewith practicing chords, arpeggios, inversion and learning new songs in general. The songs I'm interested in are more from this time (so no Beethoven and Bach, sorry guys :P).

I'm not quite sure what the best use of my time is however. I'd like to improve my piano technique in general, but also my ability to improvise and my hearing. Can anyone give me some usefull exercises I can do to spend my time more focussed on my goals. I'm having difficulty seeing the use of the exercises I'm doing now and I'd like to know I'm working towards a certain goal instead of just guessing which is what I'm doing now.

Sorry if I explained that a bit strange. It made a lot more sense in my head :P

Ear training exercises help a lot (7 Effective Ear Training Exercises). As with all skills, ear training is gradual! Also see 5 Secrets for Efficient Practice.
Youtube also has tutorial videos which might help you out.

I can recommend the following blog by Graham Fitch.

https://practisingthepiano.com/
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3
