Dramatic? That's quite the understatement! I know Lazar Berman and a few other Russian pianists have been criticized for banging, but Berman's positively velvet-gloved compared to this guy!

I know, I like understatements, sometimes. And I really like Lazar Berman very much :)
Did you see the piano punch in this guy's Chasse-Neige? oh my.... :P

In all fairness, it's an ugly piece, "nothing more than a bag of wind" as Hamelin supposedly said- se non è vero, è ben trovato.

i can't bear to finish watching the video. =(

it's way too much to see someone bludgeoning the piano like that, and it wasn't even music.

Haha, oh watch this. This is a nice performance with a epic ending, but don't fast forward, watch it all the way.

The way the other guy is playing the piano, he can consider using his head to bang the keys as a finale.

While it is indeed pretty awful, it's a shame that more pianists don't involve just some of that spirit. Despite being complete overkill at times it actually works rather well. Used more sparingly, this could make for some pretty astounding moments.

I agree.  But only if it comes from inside and reflects the sincere inspiration of the pianist.  If not, it's only shallow exhibitionism.

His piano and he have an abusive relationship. Maybe they need some couple's counseling.

He plays much worse than Lang Lang. I just want to laugh every time I see that video because he looks like a dead man playing in some parts, particularly banging the chords.

Funny? How? How am I funny?

agreed. loud and in your face is much more palatable (did i spell that right?) if served with a side of soft and delicate.

this guy gets it right, brilliant playing! (fyi the loud i'm referring too comes in at about 2:00 but it makes brief appearances as quick low register gestures, he really makes that model d rumble, really it's worth your while to watch the whole thing, it's short but breathtaking)

I was like that once. It meant regular string replacements on the higher notes (worst streak were months in between). I hate breaking strings on a regular basis. It meant either my piano is of low quality or I'm a freak. Either way it's not desirable. Plus the fact that you have to wait for the string to stretch, and have it tuned again.

I think my teacher helped me by showing to me what "banging" the piano really is. TBH, the player doesn't actually notice the ugliness while playing (for sure, I didn't). But when my teacher did it and I heard as a spectator the "ugly" result. It got the message across.

The applause should go to the guy in the audience right at the front. Unfortunately, we can only see the back of his head, and his glasses. WOW@his self-control! At one point, he looked towards the person on his left. AH! If only we could have seen the expression on his face! Would you have been able to stop yourself giggling hysterically if you were in that seat?!? I don't think I could have, HAHAha! You can see him squirming in his chair at one stage, but most of the time, he was able to limit his reactions to nudging his glasses (perhaps to cover the odd AHEM here and there, haHAHA). Such self-discipline! That is, until the very end, when everyone else was clapping, he just slumped into his chair from complete exhaustion and embarrassment. What a gem of a performance from this Asian(?) guy with the glasses! ENCORE! ENCORE!
