Liszt's transcription of Schubert's Ave Maria

Sorry it's one of those questions that annoy some people.

Where do you place this piece in terms of difficulty in the Romantic repertoire?

Do you think it is harder than Liszt's transcription of Schubert's Der Müller und der Bach?

When answering, if you could refer to Liszt's other works and works by Chopin that would be great.

By difficulty, I mean the effort required to get the piece up to a standard that can be played in a concert, so musicality comes into it as well as pure technical issues.

Having played both the above and the Ave Maria, I would rate the latter as far more difficult.

Maintaining a flowing melodic line that can be clearly heard I personally find very difficult.

i love her performance. i was going to put a score up but darn it can't find it right now, once i do i'll throw it up so folks can read along, this piece is incredible. scary hard but wow

That's actually not the nastiest version, but yes, it's fairly difficult.  It's beyond any of the sort of high-level student pieces by either Chopin or Liszt.  It's not as difficult as most other Liszt transcriptions that aren't Schubert songs, but it's probably the most difficult of the Schubert song transcriptions, behind Der Erlkonig.  Maybe you could tell us a few pieces by Liszt or Chopin that you've played?

Do you know of a recording online of the nastiest version?  The version I know of is difficult enough as it is.

Here are the pieces by Liszt and Chopin that I have learnt in the past or are currently learning:

Liszt: Liebestraume Nos 1 and 3.

Chopin: Nocturnes Op 9, Nos 1 & 2; Op 27, No 2; Op 48, No 2; Op 72, No 1
Etudes Op 10, No 3; Op 25 No 12.  Ballade No.3.


Other works I have not really played, although I have a fairly good idea what they sound like.
