on: January 10, 2012, 12:11:19 PM

in the middle of the piece there is a valse like melody that im certain i heard in one of chopin's other works, any idea where this theme was derived from?

the ballades are extended works that have elements from many of his smaller pieces, you can and wil will find examples of his waltzes, mazurkas, original/non cateorized elemetns, etc. in them, it's one of the great and challengning aspects to these works, it takes experiences with how to handle those shorter pieces to effectively navigate those places in the ballade that resemble them.
i'm studying the 1st one right now and I don't recall seeing the exact melodic elements in any other work, that is i don't see a carbon copy of these ideas in his other waltzes, it has that chopin sound and is very characterstic but to my knowledge its original. remember many of the emotinal high these develop into are essentially coming from that little 6 note figure we get in the beginning, as such with a simple basis it would be easy to hear similar elements in other works but not copies.

Are you sure you just aren't remembering it's first appearance in e-flat major at 3:20?
