Advices for learning Debussy's preludes
on: January 12, 2012, 05:16:50 PM
Hello!
This is my first post here! It's about Claude Debussy's preludes. They're one of my favourite pieces in classical music. So far I've learned four of them (because I plan to learn the whole 24 of them in a few years and play them in one recital). First I worked on La Cathedrale Engloutie (no.10, book 1). Then I took La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin (no.8, book 1) and Minstrels (no.12, book 1). Recently, I learned "General Lavine" - excentric (no.6, book 2). What do you suggest to be next on the list? I will live to hear you suggestions! Best whishes from me!

Now learning:
Mozart sonata no.11 in A major; Fantasy no.3 in D.
Mussorgsky - Pictures from an exhibition.
Bartok - Dances in Bulgarian rhytm.

I'm not sure how difficult General Lavine is, but if it's within reach, you should play Des Collines D'Anacapri. It's my favorite prelude
after Cathedrale Engloutie.

i think any of these three (or better yet the set) would be fine,
i really like no 5, the first of this set, quite evocative
i think feaux d'artifice will probably have to wait a little while

You could try no. 7 in second volume, "La terrasse des audiences du clair de lune". I am also learning some of the preludes, I can already play "Danseuses de Delphes" and "La Cathedrale engloutie", but there are some other that only need some polishing.
Best regards, Dr

I agree for Feux D'artifice being the hardest one (However, I can sight read the first five pages). But can you tell me something about Les tierces alternees or Broulliards, because they are really interesting?

hi!
feux d'artifice is the first and only debussy work i played hehe
yes i agree being the toughest, maybe the toughest debussy... dont underestimate it! to play it in 4 minutes isn't very easy, requires formidable techniques :O
his preludes are interesting! hmm... maybe some more of the book 1 preludes first, the 2nd seems more developed.... i never touched any other of them though :S
