Bach - Prelude and Fugue in f minor, BWV881 (WTC II)

the fantastic f minor prelude and fugue from the second book.  one of the most famous, and surely one of the best to fit the modern concert stage, as the lyrical prelude has a real emotional immediacy, and the aggressive fugue is virtuosic and exciting for the player and audience alike.

i think an exemplary recording of this is edwin fischer, who i tried not to imitate at all.  he had a style for bach perhaps influenced not just a little bit by debussy-style colors at the piano, which can be very addictive and tempting to copy.  i wouldnt' say i go for a drier approach, but i hope to avoid the very appealing approach he took.

I love to speculate on how Bach himself would play these harpsichord pieces, if he had been able to play a modern concert grand. Clearly he would use its full potential, ( a racing driver who raced cars back in the 30's wouldn't drive a ferrari at the speeds of the old cars - so there is something to be said for the Edwin Fischer approach. Bach might even play differently each time -we will never know.

Your performance of the prelude is very convincing and lovely in any case.
When a search is in progress, something will be found.
