ATCL repertoire..help needed for Ravel
on: January 20, 2012, 04:12:04 AM
Here's the tentative list of pieces I am working on for my ATCL performance recital.

a) Mozart Sonata no. 14 in C minor
b) Schubert Impromptu in E flat Major
c) Bach Prelude & Fugue in D minor BWV 851
d) Ravel Pavane pour une Infante defunte

....if it gets a bit too close to 38 minutes, I might switch to Bach P&F in D which is shorter.

Any comments? A particular order they'd work well in?

Also, any tips for the Ravel will be appreciated....I just can't get it sound right, no matter what I do, it doesn't seem free-flowing or delicate like in CD's and videos. :D

I'm neither a teacher nor a professional.  Just want to share my humble thoughts.

I think your programme order is OK/balanced , though I may wish to rather end the programme with a piece with ff/fff ending.  I have heard some teachers suggesting to play the most confident piece instead to start off.

I didn't check my CDs to time your programme.  As you may know, watch out for repeats.  Definitely don't do long repeat, and perhaps even think about whether you need to do the short one.  Someone shared that he was stopped by the examiner when repeating.

Sing the song out when practising.  That helps you play it correctly.  It's extremely useful especially for pieces that aren't very fast and require a lot of expressions, like your selected Ravel piece.

Good luck.  AT and LT are not that difficult.  Stay clam.  I haven't done my FT, so I can't comment but I know it's a tremendous gap and adjudicating standards between LT and FT.

Thanks :D My teacher did recommend humming and counting, but for the Bach...I'll try it for the Ravel though too.
