Something happened today.
on: September 14, 2004, 04:54:44 AM
It felt like I hit a wall, For some reason, today during and after a practice session I felt empty, really unfulfilled.

It was by no means a bad session, but I just feel off.

This happened with anyone else?

Yes, I think so.  Actually, yes for sure.  But, you sound like it has never happened to you before, is that true?

Yes it's true, it hasn't happened before(hard to reply to that :D)

6 months ago I started getting back into playing after a 7 year gap,

7 years ago I was made to do piano lessons and it was a chore but the past 6 months I have come back through the love of classical music, (I won't play anything else)

I have been going to sleep looking forward until the next day simply because of playing the piano, I have never been this passionate about anything before.

It could be because 'Un sospiro' is such a sad piece that it's depressed me  and ruined the rest of the session ;)

I'd be surprised if there's anyone here who has not had it happen to them. Don't worry about it. You will feel better the next day. This is bound to happen to anyone who has a passion for something.

Just concentrate and plan for the next practice. What are the pieces you'll be practicing, which bars or phrase you'll be working on, how will you be attacking a particular problem, etc.

All the best,

yeah i tend to go through about a week in may (just to be specific!) where i just don't feel like practicing. and so i don't, in the assumption that my pieces just want a little space, and then when i go to my lesson at the end of the week i get new things to fix up and the motivation to practice comes back again.
we can't feel completely motivated 100% of the time, unless you're insanely obsessed, but it's like trying to be in a good mood ALL the time- i've tried it and it doesn't work (not with me anyway!)

Yah, try not to let one peice get you completely down for the whole rest of the day (month, year...).

Hey, what have you been doing to learn about your pieces?  Have you been doing any research?

I have to say it is refreshing for me to hear somebody feeling genuinely inspired like you have described.  That inspiration can change and grow over time, if you let it.  At first, it is because you have come into something new, or come back to something you havn't been with for a while.  While this is wonderfully fresh and envigorating, it can only last so long because after a while, it's not all so new anymore.  Write down if you can, specific thoughts of inspiration that you have had these past few months, knowing that it will only deepen.

Inspiration needs to be trained, just like any other aspect of playing the piano.  I know this isn't quite as romantic as thinking it will be an endless flow if you really love something, but it's true and actually, no less satisfying.  If you really love something, you are committed to really seeing it through.  Which means, you will dig deeper and deeper, you will be committed through the good and the bad, and even though it is not always fun, you expect that you will find the sun again.  It's not about just sticking with it, but finding more within yourself, and expecting more from yourself.  It could be that your goals are changing even if you aren't consciously changing them.   And this is always a great opportunity for deeper enjoyment for what you love.

In any event, have fun with it!

I experienced the same feeling when I played Un Sospiro.  I think it is because you have been focussed on it too long.  I suggest you take a break from un sospiro for 3 days AT LEAST- start another piece, hopefully in a different key and mood.  In a few days, you will probably want to play Un Sospiro.  It is kind of like how a couple will not love each other as much if they spend every waking hour with each other.  If they took a 3 day break from eachother, their sex life upon reuniting would be like-- vvvrroooomm vroommm!!! ;D

Just my 50 cents... if you're having emotional mood swings you have definately become an artist.
:-/  So, it's a good thing eh?
