Looking for feedback on Mozart Sonata k545 (video)
on: February 01, 2012, 05:22:57 PM
Hey, so for a while i've been (time permitting, nursing major and full time job REALLY put a damper on time... darn you time!) trying to undo and re-learn what I've self taught myself by ear on the piano since I was 2. I decided to drop for now the 2 pieces I was working on (please don't laugh at me haha), chopin's prelude no. 15, and Chopin's fantasy impromptu. While I can effectively "play" these songs, I definitely see the need to simplify to build technique and to improve sheet reading, and sight reading skills.

so Mozart's sonata k545 it is! This is the very first time i've ever used a metronome to practice. It took a lot of getting used to, especially to be able to hear and play 16th notes to the quarter note beat, but I feel like i'm getting there. I had NO idea how much a metronome improves tone, no longer am I "rushing" notes, or clumping notes together.

So i've got the first little bit of this down pretty well I think. I'm really trying to watch dynamics, tone control (is the word i'm looking for evenness?), and a steady internal rhythm. So far I have NOT been able to count the rhythm in my head, everything falls apart. Apparently when I start counting, my brain freaks out (and interestingly I've found that when I focus on a specific aspect overly so, my hands resort to old bad habits, or early mistakes in the piece).

So yea, this represents the past 2 days of practice, probably about 8-10 hours total of practice time. Loving every second of it! I REALLY want this to be my first piece completed, and perfect it to be able to present in the audition section!

I'd love to hear anything I can improve, but it would also be great to hear feedback on things i'm doing right :).

P.S. i am aware that at the very end, my left hand goofs on the rhythm and it slows down. I'm still working this out with a metronome and it's improving, just not used to my left hand playing quick notes that are close together like that. It causes me to "gallop" if that makes sense.

Thanks guys!
