Weird names of pieces
on: February 10, 2012, 01:34:56 AM
I just want to know, what are some of the unconventional, weird and wacky names of pieces in the piano repertoire? I don't know of any. I guess most will be 20th century avante garde composers.

Can't think of any offhand, but first composer who comes to mind is Satie (though not really avant garde in my book)

I once heard about a piece by Mozart that translates to something like "lick my arse", or something like that. I don't know if that's true though.

Edit: Yep! it is true. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leck_mich_im_Arsch

Sorry this one was so foul, but I think it takes the cake as one of the worst...

I have heard about Mozart's one. ;D

My favourite however is Satie's Three Pieces in Shape of a Pear, mainly because it consists of seven pieces. ;)

Yeah Satie has some particularly ripe titles. Others include:

Unpleasant insights
Sketches and attentions of a fat man in wood
Dessicated embryos
Chapters turned in all directions

Lick my buttocks...I read it was written for a party or something. No wonder the jovial name of the piece....I think Mozart never intended this piece to be serious, hence the foul named title. Satie- weirder than I thought. Could his music be considered atonal? I dunno.

Sorabji and his Opus clavicembalisticum. Who would have such a mind to create a long name for a  piece? But it fits since the piece is long. How fitting.

Not everything.  From what I have heard, Vexations for sure.
