What is currently in your teacher's repertoire or used to be in the teacher's repertoire? Do you know of any pieces?I came up with this bizarre idea because in the studio my piano teacher sticks his repertoire in front of the sheetmusic scrapbooks. I would take a glimpse and I was quite impressed with his repertoire. So, please do tell me....JL
Has your teacher ever actually played any of his repertoire for you ? . I really feel that if you expect a student to play something in completeness, then the teacher must provide an example . It does not have to be a concerto, or Ballade , or anything in particular - just something. Show me you know how to learn and perform a piece - not just a list of things you used to know. I would ask him to please play for me so I can learn. Just because I am a student does not mean I dont have the same appreciation for the music. I have an attitude about that and I will never pay to let someone try and show me anything that they cannot do. I am not trying to knock on you or your teacher please understand.
Of course my teacher does perform for me, though they are brief snippets of pieces every time because some of the pieces are very hard to play and very demanding. If we are lucky he might play an 'easy' piece he learns, like the Rachmaninoff elegie. I think he plays virtually every time I have a lesson with him. Usually it is when he is demonstrating a passageway for me and suddenly strays off into his peices when a section of my piece reminds him/her of something. As far as I know, here are some of the pieces in his repertoire:Beethoven op 10 no2Beethoven op 90Beethoven op 13 Beethoven op 81Liszt L'orageLiszt Un sospiroLiszt grand galop chromaticLiszt TE 1Liszt GnomenreigenLiszt Nuages grisLiszt .....wellenstadtChopin etude op 10 no 12Chopin etude op 25 no 1Rachmaninoff op 3 no 1Rachmaninoff op 3 no 2Scriabin etude op 8 no 12Brahms op 10 no 1Brahms op 26 intermezzoJL
That is quite a listing for sure and I am sure from what you type that he is well qualified to play any of it. If you feel comfortable with it then great. I was not trying to imply you have a bad teacher - he might be fantastic. If you are learning from him that is what counts. If it were me I would still want him to play one piece all the way thru just so I know he understands how it is done.
He IS a great piano teacher. He teaches anything you want to learn. And he HAS played one piece all the way through, the Chopin Revolutionary etude at concert speed. It was outstanding and there were few errors. I might even venture to say that he plays it better than Horowitz, who himself was a Chopin specialist, IMO. It would be nice to know your teacher's repertoire, if you know of it. Afterall, this thread was created for that very purpose. JL
