Steingraeber and Sons Concert Grand
on: September 18, 2004, 09:24:49 AM
Sounds like Udo has finally come out with a 9' concert grand. I really liked the 6'9" one I played. Has anybody had a chance to play one? What do you think?

Steingraeber is the best piano I've ever played on in my life, without a doubt. It surpasses all the Bluthners and Bosendorfers and Steinways and Faziolis you could muster.
My friend got a 6' Steingraeber, and I go to his house to practice on it. It's just the most incredible piano you could play on.
The action feels like whatever you want it to be - for quick, light passages, the keys just fall away at your touch, but when you play with more force, the keys offer more resistance, which gives better control over the sound you make. Futhermore, the tone is simply unmatched. Every note shines through perfectly, yet does not drown out anything else. And it's amazing for chamber music, specifically (though the concert grand is probably better for concerts). No matter how great a fortissimo you reach, somehow the sound it creates doesn't drown out other sounds in the room. It's impossible to describe, and imperitive to hear.
I would certainly give a lot for a Steingraeber Grand. If you happen to have a hundred thousand dollars sitting around, there's no better way to spend it than on a Steingraeber.

Which raises the question:
What's more economical? A piano or a wife?

I would bet on the piano. I AM the wife, and if the question was reversed, I'd have to say the piano was more economical than the husband!

Get a rich wife, and have her buy the piano. It's a win-win situation.

I've played on this one last Frankfurter Messe. It is indeed very good, as all Steingraebers are.

I believe the concert grand is about 115,000 dollars. It could be more, though. I know someone who got a 6'9" Steingraeber for 75,000.

Well... I heard that Steingraeber produces something like 35 pianos TOTAL last year, and may "ramp up" production to 50 pianos a year in the future. That should keep the prices high, as long as they maintain their quality standard.
(By comparison, Fazioli makes 200~300 pianos a year, I think, and Fazioli appears more aggressive with their marketing too.)
