Counting music pieces
on: February 26, 2012, 04:43:50 AM
I was just wondering if everyone counts the music pieces and/or uses a metronome.  Or do you simply just start playing it because you're familiar with the notes and their values in relation to key signature?

Thanks!

I don't completely understand: If you have played before, you must already know all the possible note values? And obviously you can count. So can't you just do it yourself when you get a new piece?

I don't like counting at all and often try to skip it completely when learning a piece but usually I need to do it at some point if the rhythm is not very simple. But I would not like to waste lesson time to do this with my teacher. I do sometimes play wrong because I have neglected the counting and misread note values, so she does have to point out the mistakes.

Mod: After you changed your original post, my answer does not make much sense anymore :)

I never use a metronome. Horrible things!   >:( (sometimes turn it on to see what pace the mm given is, though)

I count where I need to (seems to be mostly very slow passages for some reason). Otherwise, the rhythm/pulse of the piece is enough.
