pain when I turn my wrist - carpal tunnel?
on: March 01, 2012, 02:33:39 PM
Recently I've been having an issue with my left wrist. When my left hand moves up to play higher passages with the thumb, turning the wrist and stretching the thumb-side of the hand, I get a pain in my wrist on that side. Is this potentially a carpal tunnel symptom? I'm not getting and tingling or numbness, and my playing seems unaffected except when I torque that side of the wrist like that. Anyone else ever have similar issues?

I do NOT believe that this is carpal tunnel.  However you are twisting and could be aggravating tendons.  I would suggest you simply choose less stressful movements.

Sounds like tendonitis.  Probably not a major setback, but it won't heal if you continue to aggravate it.

You might not be using your body correctly. It's hard to play at certain angles yes? So you need to adjust with your body in order that the awkwardness of the angle is minimized.

If you want further reassurance that it's not carpal tunnel then try Phalen's Maneuver.

You can try several things. It should disappear the more you play. Swim in a pool with weights on both hands, left and right, it's the best way to reduce the pain. Of course, you can try other alternatives and methods.

Drowning seems a rather drastic form of pain relief. :P
