How to get started on sight reading.
on: March 10, 2012, 05:26:11 PM
I never really learned to sight-read although I can play a few pieces from memory, and i cannot find sight-reading books where I live. I need some help-suggestions, tips, tricks, anything at all- to get started.

I recently started reading through this blog which has lots of good information and links to other sites with additional tips and tricks:

Also, you should try searching the forum for "sight read" and there are a lot of hits.

Basic technique helps, but sight-reading is a technique all of its own.

If you have a private tutor, or a buddy, sightread four-hand works.  Don't look at the keyboard for any jump less than an octave, and don't stop playing unless both of you are hopelessly lost.

Worked for me, after a year-ish.
Beethoven: An die Ferne Geliebte
Franck: Sonata in A Major
Vieuxtemps: Sonata in Bb Major for Viola
Prokofiev: Sonata for Flute in D Major
