Trills and Double Flats
on: March 31, 2012, 12:49:57 AM
My question is concerning the Sonata 2, Opus 35, 3rd movement (Funeral March by Chopin).

1. What are the actual keys being trilled in measures 19 and 20?

2. What are the keys being played marked with the double flat in measure 22?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.   Stephen

1. Measure 19 is trilling Ab and Bb. Measure 20 is trilling F and Gb.  Keep in mind that, unless marked otherwise, trills in the romantic era are started with the principle note and the upper note is diatonic to the piece.

2. Starting from the bottom up, the actual keys (enharmonically spelled) are A, A, E, G, Db.  The double-flats simply mean that, in addition to the key signature, those notes are another half-step flat.

Best,
Josh

I have another trill related questions for Sonata 2, 3rd movement Opus 35 (Chopin's Funeral):
 March):

Measure 37:

1. What is the techinque used to learn how to trill the D (flat) in the right hand and at the same time play the G-E-D(flat), B (flat) in the right hand?

You just don't do that, because it would change the expression in the music (Technique and musical expression in Chopin are ALWAYS related). The trill in the right hand is too important musically to be sacrificed only because you want to avoid some insignifant mechanical problems in the left hand. You practise the left hand until you can do it beautifully in more than the tempo and then you'll see that playing all four notes with the left hand is really the most natural and musical solution. The psychological tension you need to do it as written creates the right musical effect.
