What if I slow Hamelin down?
on: April 01, 2012, 01:23:25 AM
Here's a recording of Hamelin that I slowed down by 10% (without changing the pitch): His Alkan Concerto for Solo Piano 3rd movement recording. It's just for a bit of fun, but I kind of like how it sounds.

Wow! Such a musical improvement. Thanks!
What program did you use to do that? I want to change his 3rd movement on my computer, too.

Sorry for the very late reply. I used a free version of "Audacity." Just do a Google search for it and download it. Open up Audacity after installing it, and click "Open", and find the recording. Once you open the recording, go to the "Effects" button near the top and click on "Change Tempo." Decrease it by 10%. Then go to "File" and click on "Export".

Thanks! I'm slowing it down now.
Then I'll edit Hamelin's version of Chopin's 2nd sonata so the exposition da capos to the very beginning with the octave introduction.

What if Hamelin were to slow you down?
Best,

I've done that before. It can really change how you hear the piece and the character of the music.
Compressing is another way to change things. You can hear things buried in the background that way. It flattens all the loud and quiet out and seems to bring the quiet stuff to the front to my ears.

I just increased Hamelin's Alkan Symphonie 1st movement by 12.3%. It's much more musical and the sonority sounds more full. Ideas are better connected temporally and the awkward hesitations between musical themes are reduced and connects better.

Hamelin was already pushing the "moderato" bit of the indicated tempo . You appear to have thrown it out completely.

In his live interpretation, he actually plays it much faster than the recording. It's even faster than the 12% I adjusted it to.
Oh, and I think 12% is better than 12.3%.

And at +12%, the tempo flows very smoothly into the next movement. The marche funebre no longer seems to start too fast; it's perfect.

i prefer to speed myself from a point outside this universe until i reach a speed that makes it seem like this is all 10% slower then i can view the full speed version and it 'seem slower', that's assuming i don't do something silly like move faster than light (what if this universe is already pretty close to "c" and i shoot past in it my efforts to make it all seem slower?. how i love special relativity and lorentz transformations....

Oooh, I hate it when that happens. Makes me spill my coffee.
