Mozart K545 Ornaments
on: April 07, 2012, 04:37:04 PM
Hi,

Hope this is in the right place, first post.

I have been playing this piece for some time now, and I've been wondering about the editorial ornamentation suggestions in the following edition:

https://petrucci.mus.auth.gr/imglnks/usimg/e/e4/IMSLP00226-Mozart_-_Piano_Sonata__K_545.pdf

On page 2 a) and b) are obvious, but on page 1 whoever scanned the page chopped the footnotes off.
I can work out what to do for the trill marked b) (bar 15, page 1), but I am having trouble working out what a) (bar 1) might be, as I can't see that there is any need for a suggestion here.

I haven't been able to find another scan of this edition, or to locate a copy of the book it came from, so I was wondering if any knows, or has any suggestions as to what it might say down there? My piano teacher has looked through all the editions she has and couldn't find any with a similar note for that bar.

Any help appreciated,

Thanks

Steven

It's not a note about ornamentation. It will be a note about some other aspect, either of editorial marking or just the editorial approach. I don't have that edition, but I think it's sfe to say you can ignore it.

If note a) is placed next to the first note, it's probably some general note about the sonata as a whole, such as what the manuscript sources are, or some helpful tips from the editor. I've never heard anybody play an ornament on that note.

But this is one of those editions that they used to do with a whole lot of markings that are by the editor, not by Mozart. They drive me crazy, because why should I listen to some 19th-century editor rather than Mozart himself? Even if you want to use this edition, see if you can get a copy of an urtext edition to compare it with, so at least you'll know when you're playing Mozart and when you're playing whoever this guy is.

Given the location of the footnote (and the way the three versions of this sonata I checked on IMSLP all have different dynamics), one possibility is that it says something along the lines of "All dynamic markings are due to the editor instead of Mozart".
