Need help for repertoire
on: April 07, 2012, 08:54:42 PM
hi there, i m new to the forum , i ve been long reading many interesting discussions, and since i did see there are many helpful experienced pianists.,..

i need some help to find a third piece to play at my exhibition, possibly not too difficult, as i m not that piano monster :)
i m going to play

Alkan, Chant 65 - 2 (Espirits Follets)
Shostakovich, Prelude 34 - 9

what could be in your opinion a good piece to put in with those two?

thank you very much in advance :)

I don't have the music for these Alkan and Shastakovich pieces.   But if you give me this info., I'll be happy to think about what might go well with what you have.  Tempo (___ quarter notes per min.) Time signature (_____/______) Key: __________ Other attributes (calm, agitato, etc.)_______.  Since you've got a modern and a romantic, maybe choose a classical or baroque piece.

hi iratior, thank you for considering my post
i  m actually considering to put in Shostakovich 34 - 10 with 34 -9 and playing espirits follets only if able to learn it in time... (where 'learning' means mastering, since i know my teacher's standards :) )
still i m looking for any addon less demanding than alkan's chant... i was thinking about schumann - the prophet bird, but i m not sure yet...

shostakovich 34 - 9

shostakovich 34 - 10

alkan chant

Alkan's opus 65 no. 2 is a beautiful if short piece.  Reminds me of Mendelsohn's Spinning Song;  though that's in C-major, it too has very fast sixteenth notes in groups of six.  A "common denominator" for the keys of both pieces could be F major, so if you did the Mendelsohn spinning song and then the Mozart K.547 sonata in F-major the next thing could be the Alkan.

hmm how about a nice lyrical Liszt?

"DIE LORELEY" S.532 (1861)
i love this video, and the piano, kawai ex concert grand, man those kids in europe and asia get to play on some sweet pianos, over here steinway has the concert grand market cornered.

should be manageable, probably the middle section leading into that 5:15 mark could be problematic depending on your skill level and such but the rest of the piece is pretty benign for Liszt and the crazyness is brief

pianist Vadim Chaimovich (3/31/12)

I'm not very fond of Liszt, but this piece is gorgeous... and  I like very very much Vadim Chaimovich; his Rachmaninov's performances are superb!!!!

i agree on both, i don't listen or seek out much liszt, when i do it is usually his late works (i.e. around and after the time he joined the clergy and his harmonic language evolved to what begins to sound like post romantic modern/impressionism). but i'd never heard this and vadim played so beautifully.  i agree he's great, and his styles are consistently good, i.e. his scarlatti, mozart, scriabin, all superb.

@ the op. glad you figured it oout. what did you decided on finally?
