piano information
on: April 09, 2012, 06:45:20 PM
I am needing some information on a piano that has been in our family for a while. It is a Steinweg Nachf. grotrian. It is a large grand piano with the serial #12322. Does anyone know where i can find information on this piano?

I don't know if you know the background, so I hope I am not imparting on you something you know already.
Heinrich Steinweg ("Henry Steinway") came from Germany when he immigrated to New York in the 1800s. He had previously founded the Steinweg piano factory and partnered with Grotrian in Germany. When he came to New York he founded Steinway & Sons,. a completely separate company.
Your Steinweg comes from the original family (a different company, but originally the same founder). They were forced to remove the Steinweg name off of pianos marketed in the U.S. because of trademark legalities. Wikipedia has more here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grotrian-Steinweg
Your serial number can be looked up at the factory web site, which is in German. (Fortunately I am German!). Your piano was built in 1900.
Though they are not the famous Steinways that everybody raves about, these are very very good instruments. An instrument of this age most likely will need a rebuild, something it would be very well worth doing to.
New pianos are up there in price - just google "Grotrian" (the name they go under in the U.S. now) or look at this listing on eBay:

Good luck!
