M.P. Belaieff (Verlag) - Scriabin Polonaise Op 21
on: April 13, 2012, 01:08:04 PM
Anyone got practical hands on score opinions and perspective on these editions? On the surface they seem like a pretty good buy (i.e. dollar vs permium ) vs easier to find cheaper versions. In particular I am thinking about buying the Scriabin Polonaise Op 21, the other option is an IMC score.

Just trying to see if the first option is worth the price premium, also what kinds of editorial remarks or score suggestions it might include.

I have a PDF old score copy I previewed which is ok (not above two), but when i actually study a work and take it on officially I seldom (really almost never) play from 'sheets'/copies I was always taught to purchase good scores/editions (i use PDF files for read alongs , previews, and to score study w recordings online and stuff mainly).

I don't know that piece, but I have browsed Belaieff editions of Scriabin's piano sonatas.  From memory, there are hardly any editorial comments or fingering suggestions on their scores.  I don't know whether you are looking for a clean edition or heavily edited editions like Alfred or Schirmer.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

meh i don't mind either, sometimes their helpful, sometimes they're good for knowing how not to do it (more a crime of schirmer than others, though with more modern editions it is not as bad, i.e. i like my schirmer kabalevsky sonatas, alfred is pretty good sometimes maurice hinson has nice insights), i was just wondering about them in general, i've never come across them, but if the printing is good and the binding solid i'd  pay a couple bucks more, as long as its' better than my kalmus edition of the complete etudes, the scores are good but those white books are consistely the junkiest scores ever, the pages start falling about almost immediately i usually end up doing emergency trauma surgery with packing tape on them.

since you seem to have seen these up close what can you tell me about the visuals, is note size, margins, paper stock (is it heavy good quality, etc.).

btw you should give that less popular work a listen. it's outstanding and i've had it on deck as my next scriabin work for awhile, thoughi myself probably won't start even reading it for several months (even then i'll just occassionallly work through it to write my own fingerings in where neccesary, and litte indications etc so that's all there when i focus on it).

Thanks for the link.  It's always nice listening to new pieces.  By the way, have you listened to Scriabin's Fantasie in B Minor, Op 28?  I happen to have the Belaieff edition of that piece, which I bought more than ten years ago (buying scores of difficult music that I can't play is one of my eccentricities).

I just dug it out.  It's 15 pages long, stapled, so no problem at all with it staying open.  I suppose the Polonaise would be similar in that regard.

I'd say it's a good quality score.  It's clear, not too crammed together (five lines per page).  There are no fingerings and only pedal markings on a few bars (which I assume are Scriabin's rather than the editor's).  In fact, I cannot find the name of any editor, so it's more like a urtext or an unedited edition.

i'll check it out! i have some urtexts of scriabin works from a now defunct hungarian publisher that was around years ago, they released good quality inexpensive urtexts of the complete scriabin works but they had disappeared by the time i knew they existed so ive only been able to nab a few volumes at used bookstores unfortunately those longer works are in later volumes i don't have..., i too run a piano score rescue operation, and try to give neglected difficult piano scores a good home.  the intent is usually to 'some day' play them,  lol  ;D
