How long is your pinky, thumb, and what interval (white keys) can you play?
on: April 16, 2012, 07:07:07 AM
My pinky is 7.1 cm, thumb 7.2, and I can play from D1 to F2.
I'm just trying to see where I am.
Don't care how you can reach the interval as long as it's on the white keys and you explain your trick. I play the edge/lips when I do the max interval.

My pinky is 5 cm, thumb 5.5 cm, on the edge of the keys I reach C1 to D2.

I'm not sure how I'm supposed to measure the length of my fingers. They are not super long but my handspan got pretty stretchy when I was a kid.
1-5 (thumb to pinky) I can play a ninth from above, a tenth from the side (or from above if they're both black keys) and an eleventh if I painstakingly place both fingers (which I would never get to do in an actual performance).
1-4 I can also play a ninth from above and a tenth from the side (this sounds surprising but once your thumb and other finger are pointing in opposite directions, the length of the finger is almost more important than where on the hand it is). Same with 1-3 but it's really a stretch.
1-2 I can play an octave but I have to either play it from the side or be really careful.

Not sure about my measurements, but I can play an 11th with relative ease. I can manage a 12th if I REALLY stretch, but my wrist is also below the keys when I do this so it's nothing that can be applied practically.
If you really want to get a larger stretch there's always the option of slicing the webbing between your index and thumb, that should raise your stretch threshold by an interval or two.

I need to stretch for a 10th, but I am capable of playing it from above.
What about C to Eb? It requires a different sort of stretch than C to E and is sometimes harder.
1-5=10th
1-4=10th with almost the same ease as 1-5
1-3=10th if i STREEETTTCHHHH
1-2=octave
2-5=octave if I twist my wrist around and stretch. so 14-25 octave scales are not practical for me.
3-5=I think it's about a 6th
4-5=4th
2-4=7th
2-3=5th
3-4=4th
