Why don't they make uprights bigger than 52"
on: April 16, 2012, 05:09:40 PM
I like some of the bigger "beefy" uprights like the Yamaha YUX.

I've noticed that they don't make uprights larger than 52" though. Why?

Even a 60" upright would just be 5', not really that big compared to even most baby grands, and it'd have a much smaller footprint.

Steingraeber makes a 138 cm upright. Would that be 58" ?

It's about 54 inches approximately... off the top of my head.

probably because of the low ceiling in some apartments.  :P

p.s.
could be stability/safety issues.

It's all about cost. A taller piano costs more to make and costs more to ship.

I don't do marketing studies. But any company that sells any thing does to them. The conclusion must be that the market for big uprights just isn't there. The price might be high and the demand low.

A taller piano doesn't make any such big difference as compared to the smaller one...It just depend on how much you are ready to spend for it..

Not true - the taller the piano the longer the strings can be. You get a richer, rounder sound out of taller uprights.

Mine is 133cm, which is just over 52" if I'm correct. I'm certain it wasn't the biggest in the showroom when I was shopping for it 3 years ago, but perhaps I'm wrong :/
