Can anyone give me any information on the V. Horowitz transcription of John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever"? Any information on the score, tips on playing or comments in general are appreciated.

Thanks much,
S :)

I love this piece. im gonna play it in a concert in 3 weeks. I personally found this piece to be alot harder than i thought it would be.

The first section is pretty straight forward, the only  challenges are the big jumps in the left hand and some left hand octave scales (difficult to play fast without sounding like you're battling).

The second section is quite challenging as the main theme is continually passed between the hands, also you have to make sure that the right hand accompaniment chords sound but aren't too loud (quite difficult to do). The next section is just a transition section i think, the hardest part about this is the jumps (should be right with practice).

The next section was the hardest part for me, The right hand has to play a seperate theme as well as sharing another with the left hand (its a b*tch) then you got these trills that are immediately folowed by an octave jump to another triplet.

The next section is another transition section where you can show off your octave chromatic scales.

The last section has the quasi piccolo thing in the uppermost register whiles the left hand has to play another theme and an accompaniment (jumping around like crazy) This section is the most impressive to watch coz your hands are flying around all over the place. The piece ends with an octave theme in the right and an octave scale in the left. the part is pretty straight-forward and sounds really impressive.

Anyway those are my thoughts on this transcription. To sum up its harder than it seems but a whole lotta fun to play  ;)

Thanks so much Brew. I appreciate your comments and will keep them in mind as I start learning this piece. I don't doubt it's fun to play...it sounds like it!

Thanks again!

Remember that Horowitz did not notate his own transcriptions.  Others have created scores based on Horowitz's recordings.  Here are six different versions.

Make your own; it's much more fun.
