interpreting some markings
on: April 25, 2012, 09:12:36 AM
Two questions for one here and I'm wondering what others would do...

Brahms Waltz Op39 no 15
There are some arpeggiated chords in the left hand. Most of them fit under the hand and a rapid sequence of notes, to blur the chord, comes naturally. A couple are longer stretches than I can make, with three note chords of crotchet length in the left and quavers in the right hand. I've fallen into spreading the break on these chords so that the three notes in the left and the second quaver in the right are equally spaced (in time). However, I'm slightly uncomfortable that the effect is different to the other arpeggiations.

Chopin Mazurka Op7 no 2
This piece has some small (two or three note) groups which are indicated staccato. This is fine. Some of them have what I'd usually interpret as a slur as well - feels a bit short for a phrase mark (and is left hand only, within a bar, note changes so not a tie). I'm treating it as a phrasing of staccato notes at the moment as I've not worked out what else to do with it.
Learning:
Maxwell Davies - Farewell to Stromness
Tschaikowsky - Song of the lark
Gade - Scherzo no2 from Aquarelles
Brahms - Waltz in A flat op 39 no 15
Chopin - Mazurka op7 no 2
