Lied recital - Schumann, Schubert, Britten
on: April 29, 2012, 04:00:52 PM
Found this while looking through old recordings, this was from last semester and a part of a lied recital series for students of the academy, played by yours truly and a fellow tenor friend and student. On the program was:

Schubert - Drei lieder op. 80
Britten - Selected folksong arrangements
 ***
Schumann - Dichterliebe

Schubert    Drei Lieder, Op. 80 (Johann Gabriel Seidl)

Nr. 1, Der Wanderer an den Mond, D 870
    Nr. 2, Das Zügenglöcklein, D 871
    Nr. 3, Im Freien, D 880

The last song in particular, Im Freien, is a real gem in the repertoire in my opinion, amazingly inspired. You might discover, also, that the opening melody in the piano is rather similar to a section of the well-known F minor impromptu op. 142 nr 1.

Wonderful pianist.  was that you?  Too bad for the acoustics.  It sounded like a classroom.  An insulated one.

The hor ich das liedchen was especially beautiful.  The pianist, I mean.  I can't figure out the voice, yet.

Thanks, yes, it is me playing. As for the acoustics - it is a very small place, it is an art gallery in fact. As a concert venue, it feels like a big livingroom, but I´d say it works fairly well for lied or chamber music recitals. The advantage of small venues is the intimacy you get. I guess how much advantage versus disadvantage it is depends on the music performed. But yes, the place is a bit dry - I guess also that the microphone was placed relatively close to us..

As for the tenor I played, I´d give him a fair amount of credit for the memorization involved here - we had done Dichterliebe in concert previously but the first half was new material rehearsed together not until the week before the concert, as he had moved to Berlin during this time. All moments of doubt of what phrase was next were handled....very professionally :P
