Dynamics in Chopin's Etude Op.10 no.1

IN the score, there is no indication of piano or no pedal in bars 17-18, though every performance i hear people get lower and use no pedal most of the time. Are there are any vindications for this, is it implied? Does anybody know?

There is pedal marked on my score. That aside, you have to use a bit of discretion with all Chopin's pedal markings as the hold power of pianos in his day was less and use as marked can result in a muddy blur on a modern piano.

Full pedal over the ascending minor 9ths in bar 17 can be a bit dissonant, and its a good place for some contrast in a piece full of thunderously fulfilling mostly consonant resonances. Don't know what temperament Chopin played it with..?

For the piano, I would have thought equal, being pretty universally established by then but still not old hat enough to tempt experimentation.

As for Chopin, somewhat sulky (if Ms Sand is to be believed)
