Just started, so I need to ask 3 questions
on: May 22, 2012, 11:03:20 PM
Hi,

I have just started learning how to play the piano, so I have a few questions to ask:
1) When learning something new, I like to measure my progress, so make sure I'm getting better. Any recommendations/ideas on how I can measure my progress when it comes to playing the piano?
3) Any recommendations on a good strategy for learning how to play the piano?
2) I can spend around 10 hours/week playing the piano, so how good can I become in 6/12 months?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Welcome to pianostreet!  :)

First things first: read this before doing anything else. It will save you a lot of time, trust me.

1) I think your teacher is the best person to ask on this subject. If you are not studying with a teacher, you should find one, he/she will correct all the mistakes you make, specially since you are a beginner it becomes an even more important matter.

3) Again, read the link I posted above.

2) I can't answer this, because not everyone learns at the same speed, but maybe if you told us what pieces do you like/want to play, we could give you a more detailed response.

I'm sure you'll have fun playing the piano, as it is, in my opinion, the most wonderful instrument ever created. Good luck and don't forget to come around if you have more questions!

Thanks for the excellent link. No matter which strategy I choose to follow, I can use the memorization tips, techniques, etc.

1) I haven't got a teacher, so any ideas for measuring my progress is most welcome.

3) I would say that I'm quite average :)

4, extra question) Can anyone recommend a good book to follow/learn from? (for true beginners)

I am looking into the ABRSM exams as a way to measure my success and to keep me moving forward.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
