How do you store your printed off pdfs
on: May 28, 2012, 04:29:24 AM
OK, I've got a massive amount of pdf music waiting for me to print off and have a good play through.  I do this by putting the sheets in those little plastic inserts in a 4 ring binder. It works, but is pretty painful to do. So my question: does anyone use a different (and better?) system?

I don't know if it's better, but I use printed-off pdf's only to get acquainted with new stuff, so I don't even bind them. If I like the music, I just buy the book. If I don't, I throw it away or give the printed-off version to someone who cannot afford to buy books. I just love the smell and feel of real books too much. "Soft copies" always give me the feeling I haven't got the real thing.

I do that where I can, but some of the stuff at least I have is simply not readily available in bound form, at least not here.

agreed w above. i use PDF to preview a work if i like it or commit to taking on as a performance piece or for serious study i'll buy the score. where i can i'll buy well preserved vintage copies or new if that's all i can find.

where pdf is the only option, hmm if it is a substantial enough work i beieve it would be worth your while to take it (or several/i.e  a collection) and print them on the best paper you can afford (i.e. high quality business paper or that kind that has some 'heft' to it), and take them to a print shop to have them bound, i do not care much for spiral but some people prefer for the ease of page turning, i would prefer a better well done staple job or sewn and glue if they offer it. you can have  a nice cover page put on and simply make your own 'book' so to speak.

I have a comb binder, - I punch all the pages and do them up into their own book with a cover and contents and such. I have too much of it not to, i'd never be able to find anything (something like 2000 pages printed this year so far..)

I am fortunate to work at a printers, so I use 120gsm white smooth paper, wire binding and laminate covers.

Don't do this very often though. Most of the time I use a staple in the top left corner.

I just put them wherever.  I printed off Carl Vine's first sonata like a week ago and I don't remember where I putt lol.
