1.  4th played beautifully
2.  1st played well
3.  3rd played average
4.  2nd played poorly

See what I'm getting at?  The piece itself doesn't matter --- it's the quality of the performance.  You don't get "bonus points" for turning in a poor performance simply because the piece is notoriously difficult...  I'd place an exquisite Mendelssohn G minor over an average Rach 2 any day.

I would say 3, 1, 2, 4 if I had to pick.  That said, I agree that the performance is what counts-A superb Rach 1 will beat an average Rach 3.  However, If I were seriously looking at concertos for a competition, I'd pick something a bit less overplayed, but still highly virtuosic.  One of the Prokofiev (#2 and 5 especially) or Bartok (#2 or 3) concertos would be excellent for that, IMO.  Or, perhaps a Brahms Concerto (maybe a bit long, though).

I was thinking maybe Prokofiev 2, but I'm positive thats his most difficult one. Its a beast. I'm not sure if I could handle it yet.
