cracking noise wrist now
on: June 10, 2012, 02:26:20 PM
hurt my wrist a few weeks ago playing piano with tension and at the wrong height. although, the pain has gone away now when I rotate my wrist or go in ulnar deviation (just for a second, not to stay there) like to bring my thumb to a black note, I hear a cracking or popping sound. Is this bad? I should probably just give up before I cripple myself.

Sounds like a Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex (TFCC) Injury or wrist sprain. This type of injuries is usually treated with anti-inflammatory and pain medication, splinting, casting, or surgery. It is also worth mentioning that problems with the wrist are very often incorrectly diagnosed as either tendonitis or Carpal Tunnel Syndrom.

Did you see a doctor about it? Do you have a piano teacher? What does he/she say about it?

no. have not had it checked out by anyone. I do not have a teacher. The teachers I've had in the past never helped me with tension issues or anything like that anyway.

Is it a really serious thing?

I have had at least two bouts of major tendonitus and many Gout episodes involving my wrists. The tail end of these events always had some cracking noises. Yes it is all bad !   I have found a couple of drug-free tricks that seem to help. Washing dishes with hot water ( by hand of course ) and/or placing freshly steamed rice in a pillow case and rotating my entire arm in the warmth. There are plenty of drugs to take to relieve symptoms but the ONLY way to eliminate tendonitus is to not do what ever activity caused it - such as playing piano. At least you now know how your position at the piano caused it. If you still have cracking/popping you are probably not over it yet and should just wait. I thought three months was a long time but a Guitar playing friend says he had to go a whole year before he could pick it up again without re-aggravating. I am not a Dr. and dont propose any diagnosis for you, simply sharing my experience.
