Learning piano without school
on: June 13, 2012, 05:52:01 PM
Hello everyone.
I am new here and have been teaching myself piano for the past year or so.
Whenever I come on the forum, I am always bombarded with posts about the grade of a piece or exams people are taking on pieces. I am totally clueless about these matters and I wanted to know if I was alone here.
I am an upperclassman astrophysics major in an American university and I have recently decided to go for a music minor (in addition to physics and geology), so I have no background on music education.

Hi Char, It's same here, I started the piano playing about 4 years ago. I had around one year with piano teacher. But after that because i already read music and I need time for school ( I'm future goldsmith) so i just teach myself everyday for around 2 hours with internet or book.... Maybe it's not a good way tho. Anyway it's nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you as well.
I've figured that what I've been doing is probably not the best method for learning piano, but like yourself I need to focus on school. Although I will end up taking lessons through my music minor, they will still be about a year from now.

I am also currently teaching myself the piano, and I think teaching could be done as long as you know the basics, and the basics is the base of what your learning you just have to relate it when you encounter that symbol on the music sheet, teaching yourself could be done. :)
