Favorite Rachmaninoff Etude-Tableaux
on: June 15, 2012, 02:26:47 PM
So the Op. 33 and 39 sets are my current obsession, and I've found them all to be extraordinary and more profound than many of his other solo-piano pieces out there. After listening to both sets I've found the following to be my favorites:

1. Op. 33, No. 3
2. Op. 39, No. 1
3. Op. 39, No. 8

The above three basically define the specific aspects I completely love about Rachmaninoff. Which ones do you hold dear?

Also, as an aside, has anyone ever attempted Op. 33, no. 3? I would like to attempt it; aside from voicing issues in the shift to C Major, it doesn't seem so technically taxing...but I could be underestimating it. Suggestions would be awesome!

The obvious choice: 39/5.

33/5 is the first one I ever heard performed, and I still love it.
