What music do you listen to besides classical

Alternative, soft rock, mild rock, and a little rap.  But not the kind that's like, 'Oh yeah, I'm so cool, I do drugs, beat women, don't take care of my 56 children, and shoot people in the face'.

I don't really feel that recorded rap is good music generally.

The better rap or hip hop is in live freestyle WITH live improvised music. And it takes a VERY good lyricist to produce anything worth while, especially since half the skill is in rhymic variation that complements the music and most rappers seem to just spend time making up words that rhyme consistently.

Anything, as long as it's melodic, harmonic, somehow artistic. I admire the pop musicians from the Rock&Roll period (record your music = have a drink and let's go in a couple of takes without editing). I'm amazed by some of the quality in that period.

Since her death, I've also deliberately been listening to music by Whitney, just to remember her. Can't say I like it all, but she could sing, not doubt about that.

I also like some Jazz, but not all. Probably "Classical" only. I have problems accepting experimental stuff.

Bit of New Age, like Enya or Vangelis. I also like medieval secular music and some folk music - recently discovered a guy named Zoltan Arany on YouTube, and I just love that stuff.

They aren't classical period, but they are all still concert music, otherwise known loosely as classical music. Let's not nitpick now.

Now there is a fascinating question: just what is classical music?  Not classical period -- that's pretty well defined by the music history crowd.  But classical music?  Never really thought about a good definition for it...  oops!

But accepting a wide definition -- what else?  Some of the older US "Country & Western"; pretty much anything Scots or Scots derived (e.g. US Appalachian, including bluegrass, Nova Scotian, Cajun)

Rock mostly. I used to be obsessed with classic rock so I have a bunch of that, I'm a huge sucker for Led Zeppelin and the Eagles, but now I mostly listen to Radiohead, Black Keys and Band of Skulls.
As a general rule, I can not stand electronic music, dance, rap or dubstep. That being said I still have a select few from each of those genres, although I still maintain that I do not like the genres at all. The groups that I have are merely those I like and have nothing to do with the genre.

prog, metal, indie (as long as it's not pretentious), singer/songwriter, jazz combo, a bit of big band (Buddy Rich and the like), hip-hop (mostly underground or older, but also some Kanye--don't judge)

as I've gotten older (and I use this phrase loosely, as I'm only 18), I've realized that there is a lot of good music out there. Without a doubt, classical is the most complex and is capable of the most beauty, but other genres have merit in ways classical music does not. They're all just different languages, and even though French may be prettier than German, they're still used to say the same thing. It's also worth noting that I would rather lead an army into battle screaming in German than French. Everything has its place.

Except country. That stuff's just awful.

I enjoy my Bach just as much as the next guy but when I'm not jamming out to toccatas I'm usually listening to john mayer. I generally listen to anything and everything except bluegrass.

thats what I'm listening to now, I have no idea what they are talking about nor do I really care, but really you must admire the technology no how to be able to remix and put everything together like most rap sampling people do.

Mingo Fishtrap is probably one of my favorite of this month.

I'm a newbie on these forums.

The music I love most tends to fall into the 'classical' category. But I like a lot of different types of music, though I don't listen to it a lot - no time, usually.

some favourites:

- Fado: I love Misia and Cristina Branco and the early albums of Mariza.
- Caetano Veloso - I'd listen to the telephone catalogue if he sang it (oh, that voice!), but I treasure his album 'Fina Estampa'.
- some classic jazz - e.g. Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Coltrane if I'm in the right mood.
- classic soul and funk is always good to listen.
- other miscellaneous, such as Radio Tarifa, Orchestra Baobab, Souad Massi, I like interesting music from different cultures.
- one of my best loved albums from the 1990s: Woodface by Crowded House. Four seasons in one day...

errrr... that's about it. And as you can probably see from my favourites, I'm not really "with it" at all when it comes to music. But then I'm pretty old.

i'll assume 'classical' in the gp broad sense to include art music from the common practice period through modern 'classical'

listening for pleasure:
if we exclude those works, i tend to listen to lots of my piano collections recordings (final fantasy, nier, kingdom hearts, etc.), 'jazzical' like Kapustin (i really do not quite group himw  above), game and anime ost, movie ost, recently rediscovering my love for Palestrina sacred (choral) works.

all bets are off if it is workout music, then it's hip hop, rock/metal, techno/trance, etc.

Dream Theater is also my favorite band (going to their concert in August, woohoo!). I can say I generally listen to almost every kind of rock music, and some metal styles. I also like experimental and video game music.

As for me, I am a bit of a House-head but I do like rap and hip-hop (pre 1992 before it became too gangster!). Also, I do like some of the contemporary pop that comes out , reggae, soul, RnB (pre 2000) and jazz.
