Some place collected a half million dollars for that lady, if she'll actually get it.

I don't think that's atypical student behavior.  I also wouldn't be surprised if that lady got in trouble for not taking the "electronic device" away from the kids or for not reprimanding them or getting them in trouble.  Bizarre world.

Hmm...

I figured someone would say something like that.

Was she actually working during that?  I thought she was just travelling along on the bus.  I don't think she's got the personality for the job if she was working then.  And it's probably not the first time that's happened.  This just got recorded.

If I were her, I'd take the half million and quit.

Then again, that's the group/mob mentality going on.  They're looking for her to get riled up and she's not giving into that.  She's just putting up with them.  So she might be doing her job that way.

Stupid kids

Upsetting and depressing. I think it would be a mistake to blame the parents. It's society itself with its types of "entertainment". Besides, it's the behavior of beasts in their herd/pack or whatever you call that. Together they're strong, at least that's what they think, and they seek to punish the weak and helpless for just being there. We've seen that in history: ideal and caring fathers at home who became monsters in the service of Hitler, football (soccer) fans that ruin a train in less than 5 minutes, etc. Basically the same phenomenon. Sad, sad. People are asking themselves for dictatorship with "1984" monitoring because they can't handle freedom/liberty. :(

Yes they are stupid kids. But is the title meant like: all kids are stupid or just: those kids on the bus are stupid? i was just wondering since i'm a kid too...  :P
But really... of course they're stupid but this whole world is really stupid a lot of times too!!! I mean have you read some comments about how the parents should teach the kids to not do what they did? "Stupid" people are saying that parents should beat up their kids to teach them ....  ??? what? really??? how are you gonna teach someone to respect others and to think about how someone else is feeling by beating them up?????? I mean really people! that's exactly why this world is the way it is!  ::) my parents never beat me up and I think I am pretty respectful and I think even too much about how others are feeling!!! I mean maybe that's just the way I am and I would be even if they were beating me up... but if someone is not like that I am very sure they're not gonna teach them to care more about other people's feelings by beating them up!!!!!!!!!!! I mean how???? I mean I would sometimes (veeeryyy rarely) get a little slap or something if I really make my parents veeeeryyyy angry just like I sometimes slap a little my pets if they do something they really shouldn't, but that's just one quick moment and not anything really hurtful.... it's not beating up!!!!!!!!!! no animals are beating up their kids!!! they maybe slap them if they do something they really shouldn't do but they don't beat them up till they're a "crying mess" or something like some stupid person said!  :o  ::)  :-X it's really sad how stupid some people are!!!!!!!  >:(  ::)
these kids obviously don't know how to think with their own head about what's right and whats wrong and about how other people are feeling and so they just did what they see in this world and what they learn from this world most of the time and so what the stupid kids did is really what this stupid world is like most of the times anyway..... sad... but it's the way it is  :( and I guess people are mostly still to stupid to see that..................  :-X

Mob mentality.

I heard she was making $15,000/year there, so I would assume it's part time.

And it's a bus.  Kids are going to act up.

She should have been the drill sargeant and barked orders at them.  That's what the school is paying her for.  That type of personality.

There should be something in place where she could enforce discpline.  I'm doubting that was there. She should be able to hand out detentions or something immediately.

If there isn't a larger discipline policy/system in place, and esp. if she had to put up with that many times, it's probably easier to just take it like that. A 20 minute bus ride is easier than hours and days wasted going after those kids.

I bet the principal and superindent are squirming now.  I wish this bus monitor would sue the school.  School admin are afraid of parents suing.  It's rare an employee sues back.

You can see it escalating too. They start touching and poking at her.  It crosses my mind a few times, what's going to happen once she gets off the bus?  Although I was thinking she was riding along with them to some bus stop.  She probably stays on the bus.  I could see her getting beat up though by that group.

I imagine several of those kids might be from broken homes.  Mostly boys.  I bet they don't have good home lives.

"Stupid" people are saying that parents should beat up their kids to teach them ....

That's very bad advice in any case, because you may very well go to jail for doing that. Beating a kid on the head or even on his behind may cause very serious damage to his brain, so it's not going to work anyway.

these kids obviously don't know how to think with their own head

That's a dilemma, because at the same time, they have enough brains to post the clip they made about their "entertainment" with their phone on YouTube. They're proud before their peers of what they did (!) And the law in many countries is such that the responsibility/liability for what these "poor kids" do automatically goes to their parents. I think it's high time to change that. In the world of the beasts, what we humans call "respect" is actually "fear for the stronger". If you step out of line, you are punished. That's the only kind of reasoning they will understand.

No Bob I don't think she should have been a drill sargeant... i mean maybe there's no hope for some people anymore... but it's not reallly the right way...... because that way people just do things cause they're afraid but they still think it's ok to be mean to others so they wouldn't be mean to her cause they would be afraid but they would be mean (or even meaner) to someone else that they wouldn't be afraid of....... and that way it never ends!!!!!!!!!!!! it can never end this way people!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what people should learn is that it's not ok to hurt others!!!!! all people are thinking about is: me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me memememememememememememe and they don't think about how others are feeling they don't think about how someone else is feeling they don't care, they don't try to see other people's  feelings or feelings of other living beings they don't try to see their souls they just see themselves! and that's why it is the way it is! If people would really see others they wouldn't even want to hurt them because it would hurt them too! I mean... imagine if there was some war or something and this woman was the "enemy", then all people would be like: oh these boys are so brave and they're doing the right thing..... or if people would think that what she is is somehow wrong or bad they would all be proud of these boys! but it's not right!!!! it should never be right to hurt someone just for no reason just cause they are what they are and the way they are or just cause they're different than you or cause you decided that there's something wrong with them!!!!!! but people think it's ok sometimes but really bad some other times............ but it's not!!!!!!!! it's not ok!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's what I mean with that they're too stupid.... they're not stupid in like that they would have a low IQ or whatever that doesn't matter at all.... they're stupid in the way that they only see themselves and noone else and noone elses feelings and that's the way this world is most of the times and that's what's really stupid! and people are trying to change only some things and only the things they decide they should change instead of changing this stupid selfishness!! people should learn to see others and respect them for what they are! but maybe people need like about 1000 more years to be able to do that or even understand it....  :-\

Sometimes another "pack" can surface and handle them, similar to the internet threats.  The teacher just turns their back... Mysteriously the troublemaker suddenly shuts up. If anyone hit anyone, the teacher would have to see that to enforce, but if not... It's really just one student's word against the other, and we have to get back to class....

I think that kind of thing happens all the time.  It's just that someone posted the recording.  I'm sure we'll see more of it or... It's already out there, posted.  This one incident just happened to get more attention.

Actually, in Russia this has been going on for quite some time now. Teenagers, for example, beating up one of their peers (sometimes to death) and then posting this on YouTube or in their "a-social" network to see, who gets the most "Likes". :(

Someone who knew one of the bullies' family was quite worried. Apparently, strangers are going to the bully's home threatening the family.

Quote
"I feel kinda bad for them and their families because of what's going on," she said. "They're being harassed terribly, and I don't like that. I don't want any harm to come to them."

Unfortunately, life is a lot different now. Kids from my generation did stupid things and got punished and moved on. Today, you make a really stupid move like posting the video and you could be punished for life. This video will remain on the net for years much like the way Casey Heynes' bully will.

IIRC the kids posted this with the proud caption of "Making the bus monitor cry". They wanted publicity and they got it.

Suspended.

I bet... If it weren't so publicized the punishment wouldn't be the same.  Even with a video.  I bet it's treated differently since it went national.

Of course. Because in this growing police state society that we live in, only the rules count and the punishment for those who have broken the rules that others have set.
The heart doesn't count at all, in the first place!

Only grades count, and the "survival of the fittest" (which is per se anyway a misconception and misinterpretation of darwinism)  and to obey the rules. What your heart says doesn't matter. Education of the heart or empathy is not important. It's only important to get "strong", and get "stronger" than others so you can bash and beat them. So, scarily, they actually just did what they have been taught all the time, made it real, lived it. If this society was really honest they had been put on a pedestal and declared for heroes. But this society is deeply hypocritical! It needs a few black sheep to "keep the prisons working", so to say.

So it's not only a problem of those few individuals, it's a problem of our society as a whole, and it's ethical values.

The most direct explanation is that of a mob reaction. TBH, if you think about it a few steps further, the seemingly excessive punishment could save the bullies' lives (and their families).

As I quoted above, the victim is already worried about them. With the public thinking that the kids got what they deserve, they could walk outside a little safer.

I don't want to judge society black and white. We perceive society solely as
Because in this growing police state society that we live in, only the rules count and the punishment for those who have broken the rules that others have set.

It's only important to get "strong", and get "stronger" than others so you can bash and beat them.

But this society is deeply hypocritical!

is dangerous. There have been many cases wherein the public has been rallied to help the "weak". I mean, after a calamity, the current tendency of the people is to give aid, not to beat up the "weakened" victims. The problem is more complex than that and if you simplify the problem, you get simplified solutions which are dangerous (almost made me conjure godwin's law).

In truth by involving the public in these issues, the rules flew off the window. More likely, you have to bend the rules to appease the public. If the school obeyed strict rules on policy implementation, it is possible that the kids could get away with this without any punishment as most bullying cases do.

What a bunch of losers!  They think they're soo tough.  They're probably from one of those stupid rich neighborhoods whos parents sue the school for something stupid like their child's leg falling a sleep in class.  If I was there, I would beat their asses.>:( >:( >:(

Arrogant douchebags...  I would like to see them get away with that on the south or west side of Chicago.

Ha... Imagine if the parents of those kids now sue the school for enforcing bullying policy differently.  Treat kid x one way, kid y a different way... and then of course they're singled out since it's all public.....  ::)  Or someone sues the school for allowing the video to be released.   ::)

700 grand now?  And she gets 650?  And she's how old?  You know who's going to get the money fairly soon.

And the school suspended those kids for a year.  I've never seen a school be quick to suspend anyone.  They lose out on state funding so they will bend over backwards not to suspend someone.
