UK Car Tax is Unfair!
on: June 24, 2012, 03:47:22 PM
I may in the near future upgrade my old 1999 registered car -the old girl is apparently a filthy beast -spewing out 195g/km of CO2.  According to UK law I have to pay £135 a year to keep her on the road.  Because she is pre 2001 I have to pay per engine size -not emissions -technically this would be £235 if it was post 2001 -

Someone who owns a new or newish Bluemotion Polo1.2 -pays zero tax -Zilch -This car only spews out 91g/km -On the surface this seems fair enough.

However, the system takes no account of your actual mileage per year. I drive my car about 40 km a week -so my carbon footprint is still going to be much less than someone with the Polo who drives even as little as 10 km a day -and some drive vastly more than that.

Another crazy irony, is that if I upgrade to an almost new Corsa Automatic for example which spews out around 143g/km -I will pay £125 a year -Despite the fact I would be significantly reducing my footprint -I would still be paying just £5 less and still much more than the road hungry Polo driver -You could in principle be driving 50,000 km a year and even with a low emission car have a large footprint -Suppose I should fork out for a Bluemotion Polo -but they are quite expensive -doesn't make sense in terms of saving on car tax!

I don't know what the tax laws are in the USA or in other parts of Europe or Asia -but the UK Car Tax System is just plain silly and unfair.

Let me know what your laws are and/or what you think of this and how it could be fairer -

We don't have to pay a carbon emmissions tax on cars, at least where I live.  Some cities might.

We do get tax breaks if we buy energy efficient things, so a green car might get some money knocked off at tax time.

They're just trying to force you to buy new or they've found a new way to squeeze tax money out of you.

Governments are good at taxing us unfairly!

This will be my 25th tumbleweed thread -I am proud of this record -lol
