LISZT - La Campanella - ENZO (work in progress)
on: July 01, 2012, 06:17:06 PM
EDIT :  Below is the video taken July 4, 2012 - Our apologies as we had to "CUT" teacher instructions at 4:27-28 for which Enzo continued to listen by turning his head to the right... sort of "oh, did that suck?!" hehhee. ;D ;D ;D

ORIGINAL POST: July 1, 2012
We hope you won't mind us posting this overplayed and overworked piece by Franz Liszt. It seems like every kid and teen in YouTube is attempting to play this and Fantasie Impromptu by Chopin.

A sudden decision in late May by his teacher to include this piece in his recital in mid-August made Enzo scramble to come up with something.  He still has about 6 weeks to polish the piece. Your INPUTS is most appreciated.  THANKS!!

Our apologies for some missed and wrong notes and the end part which is still a bit messy.

Just from the first seconds I can tell this sounds very "dry", he should put a bit more of pedal. Remember that the sound of a bell lingers for a little time, it doesn't disappear at once. Other than that, I don't see any other kind of problems, six weeks should be more than enough to deliver a better performance of this piece, which is already very good.

I enjoyed this very much, Enzo, even with some obvious mistakes.  When you make mistakes, it makes me feel closer to you.  You're such a super prodigy that making mistakes and being a little hesitant makes you feel more human to me. I think the pedaling was fine, actually.  Often this piece is over pedalled and the notes get murky.  But here, your bells rang out crisp and clear, like chimes over a beautiful sunny meadow and it was very clean with that spare pedal.  I loved it and I hope you keep posting your practice pieces and also the finished product.  This piece is already very good as it is, even with mistakes.  In six weeks, you'll be ready to win a competition with it!!  Congratulations!

:)  Enzo was born to play this -

I think also the pedalling is just fine -clarity is more important at this tempo -

The scale passages are breathtaking already -

I hope we can hear an after version in 6 weeks time!

There is always some anxiety generated in the performer and parents(more on the parents!! ;D ;D) that a new piece will be "rejected".  We are so glad, Enzo more so that he is starting with the correct foot, so to speak gauging from the encouraging comments despite obvious mistakes. It always recharges him to double his efforts!!  YES ... we will post the after 6 weeks version!!  and we hope it will generate as much acceptance as this work in progress.

THANKS! THANKS and more THANKS!!

He definitely has the technique to play this and surpass my rendition of La Campanella. I'll have a look at the youtube later on.

My advice is to not focus on the speed, that'll happen. Shaping the phrases until you're satisfied yourself and 6 weeks is plenty of time.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
