Do you know any folk style music?
on: July 02, 2012, 10:46:24 AM
Hi there! Do you know any music that resembles Vivaldi's Alla Rustica (first movement), Haydn's Gypsy Rondo, Holst Brook Green and St Paul's suites, Monti's Czardas, Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies Bartok's Romanian Dances, Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen or Dvorak's Slavonic Dances? If you haven't already noticed, all those pieces resemble european folk music. Are you aware of any similar music?
Thanks in advance,
Jim

Perhaps chopin's mazurka's and polonaises? they're supposed to resemble polish folk music i think.

There's a guy on YouTube by name of Arany Zoltan, who plays all manner of medieval and folk music on a variety of instruments. If you are good at playing by ear, his work may be of use to you. If not, go listen anyway: it's wonderful stuff. :-)

the Op 28 set of preludes by Kabalevsky is based on Russian folk songs.

Ralph Vaughan Williams's works are all about English folk music. Unfortunately, he wrote no piano solo music.
There is a nice transcription of his Fantasia on Greensleeves, I think.

Percy Grainger set some folk songs to piano solo as well (the Three Scottish Folk songs for solo piano come to mind, there could be more though, i would guess so)

many of Gottschalks pieces were folk melody based as well, including some of his better known and better constructed ones, i have started work on this in the past and plan to pick it up againiover the Christmas holiday to complete my work on it for a spring performance (once i finish the fall music)
i love this thing. so much fun!
the piece is a blast to play

Thank you all very much for your suggestions! I just heard fantasia on Greensleeves and it is awesome!
As far as Gottschalk and Grainger are concerned, well, as an admirer of both folk music and american music you can imagine that I have many collections by them!
As you mentioned 49410enrique all works by those two (virtuoso) composers are on the one hand so demanding but on the other hand sooooo rewarding in the end! Good luck with learning the Souvenirs!

I am happy that my advice was of use.
When learning the Fantasia, be sure to accentuate the "Greensleeves" melody - in the first part of the piece (after the introduction) it is in the middle register, in between other voices, which are not meant to be heard in the foreground.
