Hypermobility in the right hand fingers
on: July 06, 2012, 12:34:39 PM
I am, as I believe, severely "double-jointed" in the right hand fingers. I think it's a hindrance to my piano playing. They're annoying to deal with, and I can't even try to play with flat fingers with this issue.

When I try to play fast (even pieces with sufficient practice), the fingers often collapse or lock up. An example: I'm playing the semiquaver runs of Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca, fingers lock up. I'm literally unable to play another note without stopping. Joy.

Is there any way to fix this?

As for my left hand, I sort of unknowingly fixed it by practicing the Revolutionary Étude to death. I could, for say, learn Chopin Étude op. 25-11, but these sort of pieces are sort of out of my range, and I wouldn't push it.

I have the same problem, tackled it early by scales and arpeggios. That's all you have to do. A back to basics approach is necessary.
