Total beginner needs advice on what to practice
on: July 07, 2012, 03:32:54 PM
Hi all

As a bit of background. I'm a drummer and I want to learn an instrument that will help me understand my bandmates a bit better. Somehow keyboard felt like the natural way to go. I got an old keyboard from the keys player in my band and have been looking up excersizes and songs online.
The problem I have right now though is that there's so much info online. It's hard to find what is important and what's not. If anyone can give me any tips on what to learn and how to approach keyboard practice it would greatly help me.

I would probably do more good asking for advice than giving advice, but here's a book on how to practice, rather than what to practice.

I found it useful when first starting piano, but sadly neglected a lot of information until I recently reread it.

I’m not adequate person to say what you can do to start well.
I start on piano chosen any music sheet, with professor agreed. Play it slow, slow (you play drum, you know that). Same time studies this music, I studies how read a sheet music. I study the harmony of this music, scales, chords, progressions... Parting of my first music I begin studies a lot of things. Take what study in music – I thinkin what the progress what do here? After know. my curiosity impulsion to another progression styles. When I finish read and memorize I read a lot of things, but not memorize that news. When finish study the scales of piece I work in new scales… (understand?)

Work with me, but a lot of friend play a lot of pieces. I have a small repertoire, but have deep know about much of things. Mine friends have a biggest number of pieces to play.

I’m not here to suggest you.  Just talk what work fine with my life style. Find your and wait rest of people say what is good for begin. :D

i'm not much good on english, sry. any confusion...

edit: Of course, maybe you want know how sit and use your body to play. But how you is drum player I think you know how this is important.

If all you really want is to understand your bandmates better, and get a feel of the keyboard, then best thing to practice on is the actual songs that your band plays.

Ask your fellow keyboard player to show you how to play the songs you guys are already playing, and work only on the songs you love. There is no point jumping into the traditional classical training and what not.

Learning how to play by ear is the best option for you.

Best of Luck!  :)
